Mit der dritten Jahrestagung des DFG-Graduiertenkollegs Das Dokumentarische. Exzess und Entzug, die vom 8. bis 10. Mai 2025 im Kunstmuseum Bochum ausgerichtet wird und gleichzeitig auch den Abschluss und die bevorstehende Auflösung eines insgesamt neun Jahre lang gewachsenen Forschungszusammenhangs bildet, schlagen wir vor, das Dokumentarische von seinen Enden her zu denken und den Fokus auf diese medialen und ästhetischen Grenzfiguren dokumentarischer Existenzweisen in den Wissenschaften und den Künsten zu richten. Wenn es der Beobachtungsrahmen selbst ist, der darüber entscheidet, wann ein Prozess als beendet betrachtet werden kann, dann wollen wir uns mit den Begriffen, Praktiken und Politiken beschäftigen, die das Bild formen, das wir uns vom Ende machen.

The third annual conference of the DFG Research Training Group “Documentary Practices. Excess and Privation” will take place from May 8-10, 2025 at the Kunstmuseum Bochum. The event represents both the conclusion and the imminent disbanding of a research context that has grown for nine years.
We suggest that we think about the documentary with regard to its ends and that we direct our focus to liminal medial and aesthetic figures of documentary modes of existence in scholarly disciplines and the arts. If it is the observational frame that determines when a process comes to its end, then we wish to probe the terms, practices, and politics that form the image that we can make with and out of ends.
